Haze crisis: Still no breather for much of Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: The west coast of Peninsular Malaysia continues to be suffocated by the haze, with 25 locations registering “unhealthy” Air Pollutant Index (API) readings this morning. The numbers are expected to rise as the day progresses.

On the Peninsula’s east coast, eight locations in Pahang and Terengganu are experiencing “unhealthy” air.

In Sarawak, five areas registered “unhealthy” API readings at 9am, with Sri Aman leading the way, at 188. The state, too, is expected to see further deterioration in air quality over the course of the day.

Nationwide, 38 areas are experiencing “unhealthy” air, while 29 have registered “moderate” API readings.

An API reading of between 0 and 50 is categorised as good, 51-100 (moderate), 101 to 200 (unhealthy), 201 to 300 (very unhealthy) and above 300 (hazardous).

According to the Asean Specialised Meteorological Centre (ASMC), moderate-to-dense smoke haze, which continues to emanate from hotspots in central and southern Sumatra, is being blown across the Strait of Melaka towards Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore and southern Thailand.

Across the South China Sea, moderate-to-dense smoke is also blowing from hotspots in South, Central and West Kalimantan towards western Sarawak.
