Villagers exposed to hydroponics agriculture during Skudai excursion

MUAR: Members of the Kampung Jorak Rural Community Development Council (MPKK) were given hands-on exposure to the benefits of cultivating vegetable crops using hydroponics methodology and technology, during an excursion to Skudai, Johor Baru, today.

It was an eye-opener for the group, who said that they will share their newfound knowledge with their community back home and explore hydroponics agriculture as another source of income.

The MPKK said participants in Kampung Jorak will cultivate their own plots of land to grow selected types of vegetables in hopes that their village will become known as a reliable provider of fresh produce.

Among the plants they have their eyes on cultivating are leafy greens, especially the Brazil Spinach, which currently retails at RM80 per kg. It is very easy to grow and contains beneficial nutrients when cooked or plucked fresh from the hydroponics pot.

MPKK community chairman Nazaruddin Abdul Aziz said that the hydroponic method of farming could be used to cultivate high value crops in vacant agricultural land.

“We have many vacant agricultural plots where we plan to introduce hydroponic farming.

“This can be done even in a small area of land. Our villagers can benefit from this, and we hope that the neighbouring communities will follow suit with some encouragement from their respective village heads,” he added.

The group was also served homegrown vegetables during the excursion in Skudai, which allowed them to savour the fresh taste of hydroponic crops.
