UMS launches highland agriculture research and learning centre in Kg Mesilau

KOTA KINABALU: University Malaysia Sabah's (UMS) EcoFarm Management Centre celebrated the inauguration of a significant collaboration project for highland agriculture research and learning at Kg Mesilau, Kundasang Ranau, Sabah First Info reported.

This initiative marks a step towards establishing a hub of excellence in highland agricultural research, including agro-tourism, as articulated by UMS Vice-Chancellor, Datuk Dr Kasim Mansor.

The Highland Agriculture Research and Learning Centre UMS Kundasang, known as PETIK, is the culmination of a partnership between UMS and the Kundasang Aquafarm initiated in 2021, with a formal memorandum of agreement (MoA) signed in 2022. This collaboration has led to the completion of 10 greenhouses equipped with hydroponic facilities for the production of leafy vegetables and fruits.

"Phase one of PETIK's development is entirely complete, and we have already commenced planting and selling our first produce.

"This collaboration serves as a platform for students and the community to gain knowledge and experience in sustainable highland agriculture management in line with the agreed MoA with Kundasang Aquafarm," Kasim said.

PETIK also welcomes students from various universities for industrial training, promoting industry and community relations through highland agriculture skills courses and workshops.

EcoFarm Director Dr Januarius Gobilik revealed further plans for PETIK, including the cultivation of high-value leafy vegetables and fruits using hydroponic systems and planting Arabica catimor coffee plants on the hill slopes.

"Beyond research and learning, this also relates to soil structure stabilisation in the area and producing coffee products to enhance the local coffee industry," Januarius said.

The project is also packaged as agro-tourism, involving not just UMS students and researchers but also the local community, aiming to deepen the project's impact further.

PETIK stands as a testament to UMS's commitment to advancing agricultural innovation and sustainability, fostering a deeper understanding and interaction between the academic community and the broader society in highland agricultural management and agro-tourism.
