CYBERJAYA: 5G demonstration projects will be rolled out for a period of six months, starting tomorrow until March 30, next year.
Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said the projects involved an initial investment of RM116 million by eight telecommunications companies — Maxis, Petronas, Celcom, U Mobile, edotco, Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM), Altel and Digi.
MCMC chairman Al-Ishal Ishak said the companies would demonstrate 5G use cases across nine sectors in Kedah, Perak, Penang, Selangor, Terengganu and Kuala Lumpur.
“This is in line with the government’s hope to expedite the deployment of 5G for businesses across industries such as agriculture, education, entertainment/media, digital healthcare, manufacturing and processing, oil and gas, smart city, smart transportation and tourism,” he said today.
In April, 5G demonstrations were launched in Putrajaya and Cyberjaya.
Al-Ishsal said the projects would focus on facilitating and cultivating the development of a holistic and inclusive 5G ecosystem in the country.
“This will stimulate demand as well as adoption of 5G technology for both businesses and consumers.
“We hope to commercialise some of the use cases beginning third quarter of 2020,” he added.
Al-Ishsal said the use cases that would be conducted included smart traffic lights, smart parking, remote diagnosis, medical tourism, remote medical consultation, smart agriculture, augmented reality for education, vehicle tracking and 5G 360° panoramic live video surveillance.
He said unwavering support and investment from participating companies demonstrated the industry’s commitment in establishing strong use of 5G applications.
“This will transform various industries as well as impact positively the living standards of Malaysians.
“MCMC hopes the use cases will attract more investments into the development of 5G in Malaysia, as well as proposals to enhance connectivity nationwide,” he added
Explaining further, Al-Ishsal said the 5G demonstration projects aimed to facilitate, develop and foster potential development of 5G use cases in real time.
“And, subsequently drive the growth of the 5G ecosystem in the country. It also aims to create awareness and stimulate demand for the use of 5G technology,” he added.
Upon completion of the demonstration projects on March 30 next year, potential 5G use cases would be identified and subjected to commercialisation, he said.
“The move is expected to impact not only the country’s economic competitiveness, but also the realisation of Malaysia’s aspiration to become the world’s leading 5G technology frontier,” he added.
