200 left homeless after massive Lahad Datu blaze

LAHAD DATU: A fire which destroyed two blocks of residences at Kampung Teck Guan here, on Thursday night, has left over 200 people from 44 households homeless.

However, there were no casualties in the 8pm incident.

District Fire and Rescue chief Ismaidi Ismail said that they were alerted to the blaze at 8.37pm and deployed 31 personnel, including firefighters from the Kunak station, to the location.

"There was difficulty in getting water resources in the area.

“But the fire was brought under control by 10.35pm and doused at 12.22am,” he said when contacted.

Ismaidi said that the blaze completely destroyed 20 homes located in the two blocks, as well as four other houses nearby.

He added that the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Meanwhile, district police chief Assistant Commissioner Nasri Mansor said that some victims have sought shelter at a temporary evacuation centre, while others have been taken in by their relatives.
