KUCHING: Sarawak plans to build five hydrogen fuel stations, in a move to introduce hydrogen fuel-powered cars in the state.
Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Abang Openg said the state government is currently conducting research and development (R&D) work on the feasibilty of hydrogen fuel-powered buses, which could also be applied to cars.
“Becaus of this, the use of hydrogen cars in Sarawak might take time, depending on the R&D results,”he said.
Abang Johari was speaking to reporters after closing the 2019 Sarawak Design, Innovation and Creation Expo (SIIDEX) exhibition at the CIDB Convention Centre, here, yesterday.
Also present were state Minister of Education, Science and Technological Research Datuk Seri Michael Manyin Jawong, Utilities Minister Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom; Deputy Minister of Education and Technology Research Dr Annuar Rapa'ee, and UiTM Sarawak rector Professor Dato Dr Jamil Hamali.
Meanwhile, Abang Johari garnered curious attention when he arrived at the event in a Hyundai Nexo car, a South Korean-produced vehicle that uses hydrogen fuel.
“Driving was smooth and quiet. And it’s safe too,” he said, adding that the price of the vehicle was lower than his Mercedez Benz official car.
