Cross-border smuggling: Officers, personnel transferred, says IGP

KUALA LUMPUR: Several police officers and personnel suspected to be involved in graft, related to cross-border smuggling activities in Perlis, have been transferred and will no longer be allowed to serve in the field, said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador.

Without revealing further details, he said they would remain in their respective General Operations Force (GOF) battalions but confined to desk duties as well as internal camp administration.

“They will not be allowed to serve in the field such as the national border anymore. Some of them had actions taken against them before.

"GOF, which is placed under the command of Bukit Aman's Internal Security and Public Order Department director Datuk Seri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani, had contributed greatly toward tightening the border security,” he said.

Last week, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Latheefa Koya showed video clips of smuggling activities in Perlis which has seen enforcement agencies turn a blind eye since 2017.

Among the goods smuggled were cooking oil, onion, fertilizer, diesel, petrol and sundry items which are cheaper in Malaysia compared to the neighbouring country. -- Bernama
