Kelantan bracing for floods

KOTA BARU: About RM1.3 million has been allocated to the Kelantan welfare department in preparation to face this year's floods.

State welfare department director Said Sidup said the amount was allocated by the state and Federal governments.

He said the money would be used for various purposes during the floods which include food supplies and other necessities.

"A total 606 flood relief centres had been identified throughout the state which will be used to accommodate more than 200,000 victims.

"Kuala Krai has the most centres with 50, followed by Kota Baru (33) and Pasir Mas (29)," he said.

He added that the 606 flood relief centres would be set up in 1,066 villages in the 10 districts in Kelantan.

"Apart from that, we have also set up a main food supply depot and 17 mini depots to store the food items for flood victims.

"At the moment, the food supplies at these depots can last up to three days and can feed about 13,000 flood victims," he said.

He said all the department's 336 staff were ready to face any eventuality of floods expected to hit Kelantan.

"At the moment, there is no need to freeze anyone’s leave as the floods have yet to hit Kelantan," he said.

It was reported that east coast states are expected to experience four to six episodes of heavy rainfall from early November to January due to the northeast monsoon that often results in major floods.
