Error during maintenance work causes flooding at Komtar

GEORGE TOWN: Several floors of the state government’s administrative centre at Komtar here today were flooded due to an error during maintenance work.

In a statement issued today, PDC Setia Urus Sdn Bhd said a contractor’s workmen, who had been appointed to replace major components of the fire system in Komtar, had accidentally opened a strainer without turning off the water supply, causing water to gush out of the pipe and flow downstairs.

Works began in September and were due for completion next month.

“The water supply was shut off immediately.

“Nonetheless, the large amount of water kept running down to lower floors,” it said in a statement released soon after the incident.

PDC Setia Urus said as a precaution to prevent further damage, all high zone lifts (blue lifts) were immediately shut down.

“The mid and lower zone lifts could still function as the water did not reach higher levels (of the floor).

“The incident will not cause a shortage of water supply to Komtar.

“PDC Setia Urus has responded to the incident immediately and by 2pm, most of the problems have been addressed with business returning to normal.”

Photos and videos of the flooding went viral afternoon.

It is learnt that there was a minor panic, but there were no reports of any untoward incidents.
