Kelantan sees more evacuees, Terengganu improves, Pahang on tenterhooks

KOTA BARU: Flood situation in Kelantan continued to worsen as the number of victims in the state increased to 499 this morning compared to 198 last night.

The victims, from 132 families, are now housed at 15 flood relief centres in four districts, in the state.

The flood which entered its third day in Kelantan also saw two more new districts - Pasir Mas and Pasir Putih being inundated.

According to Welfare Department's flood disaster portal, as of 9am, Pasir Mas district registered 190 evacuees, followed by Tanah Merah (173), Pasir Putih (99) and Machang (37).

Among the affected areas include Bakong, Kampung Lubok Setol, Kampung Siram, Bukit Panau and Kampung Padang Kijang.

Meanwhile, the Golok river’s water level at 9am reached 10.15m, which is 1.15m above its danger mark of 9m.

The Lebir river water level in Tualang stood at 31.12m which is 0.12m above the warning level of 31m.

Three other rivers' water level were also at the alert level. They are the Golok river in Jenob, the Kelantan river in Kuala Krai and the Kelantan river in Kusial.

Meanwhile in Rantau Panjang, rescue teams continued to evacuate flood victims to relief centres as the Golok river which has since breached its bank, saw more nearby areas being inundated with water.

In, KUALA TERENGGANU, the number of victims seeking shelter at flood relief centres in Terengganu saw a significant drop as of 8am today.

There are now 1,432 victims from 403 families seeking shelter at 31 centres in four districts; Setiu, Besut, Hulu Terengganu and Dungun.

Previously at 8pm on Saturday, there were 1,788 victims from 492 families.

Some victims seeking shelter at Setiu, Besut and Hulu Terengganu centres were allowed to return home, as authorities cited improved weather conditions.

As of this morning, there are only 62 victims from 22 families seeking shelter at three centres in Setiu, compared to Saturday's 190 victims from 56 families at five centres.

In Besut, 902 victims from 229 families are seeking shelter at 23 centres compared to last night's 1,094 victims from 273 families.

A total of 11 families were allowed to return home in Hulu Terengganu, leaving only 187 victims from 74 families seeking shelter at two centres in the district.

However, the numbers in Dungun remained stagnant where 281 victims from 78 families are still seeking shelter at three centres.

Terengganu Civil Defence director, Lt Col (PA) Che Adam A. Rahman said although flooding conditions have somewhat improved, the weather is still categorised in the yellow zone.

He added that a large part of the state was still experiencing rainfall.

He said the disaster management agency would continue taking precautionary measures for the time being.

Che Adam said the evacuation process and engagement with residents have been smooth.

Meanwhile, three rivers in the state has been categorised in the danger zone as of 6am today.

They are Sungai Nerus at Kampung Langkap which saw its water level increase to 21.37m; Sungai Setiu’s water level at Kampung Besut stands 17.61m in Setiu, and Sungai Besut water level at Kampung La, Besut which stands at at 22.17m.

Both rivers in Setiu are showing downward trend, while Sungai Besut is trending upwards.

Three rivers in Terengganu had also surpass the alert level; Sungai Dungun at Kuala Jengai, Dungun is at 20.64m, Sungai Telemong at Kampung Kuala Ping, Hulu Terengganu is at 18.95m, and Sungai Nerus at Kampung Bukit, Setiu is at 13.03m.

All rivers categorised in the alert zone are showing a downward trend.

Sungai Setiu at Jambatan Permaisuri was recorded at alert level as of 8am this morning at 8.14m and is showing an upward trend.

In KUANTAN, Only one major river in Pahang exceeded the alert level this morning, compared to four rivers on Saturday, following heavy rains.

According to the infobanjir.water.gov.my website, as of 9am this morning, Sungai Lepar near the Gelugor Bridge recorded

a reading of 28.73 meters (m) above the normal level of 27 m.

Three rivers, above the alert level on Saturday, had also began to show decline in thei water level, namely, Sungai Tembeling, Kuala Tahan in Jerantut which stood 63.23 m, but still exceeded the normal reading of 60m.

Similarly, the Kuantan River at Pasir Kemudi stood at 5.54 m, reduced to 4.28 m but the normal level of the river was two meters while the Belat River near Sri Damai stood at 2.97 m compared to the normal water level which is at 1.50m.

As such, residents living in lowland areas especially near the river were cautioned to prepare themselves for evacuation in case of floods.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MET Malaysia) issued a weather alert of heavy rain expected to continue in Pahang until Monday.

In a statement it said that heavy rain is expected to hit the districts of Kuantan, Pekan and Jerantut.

"Thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds are expected to occur in the Pahang waters until December 6.

"This can cause winds of up to 50 km per hour (kmsj) and rough seas with waves reaching a height of up to 3.5 meters and harmful to small boats and marine sports activities," he said.
