Refrain from harping on sensitive issues, Umno delegates told

KUALA LUMPUR: An Umno Youth leader has reminded those selected to speak at the ongoing Umno annual general assembly to avoid harping on sensitive issues that will subsequently hurt the image of the party.

Umno Youth exco Bastien Onn said speakers should refrain from touching on matters related other religions as enshrined in the Federal Constitution.

Bastien, who is also the Segamat Umno Youth chief, said speakers should focus on ways on how Umno can create a new narrative to rejuvenate the party and make it more appealing to the younger generation.

“We must be wise and brave in highlighting issues related to the environment. This includes matters related to climate change as well as efforts to conserve the environment and protect wildlife,” he said in a statement.

He said Umno should make it clear that the party rejects all forms of corruption and support any effort to eradicate corrupt practices.

“According to the statistics prepared by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), almost 50 per cent of people arrested in corruption cases involved those aged below 40.

“This is a worrying trend since the younger generation are the future leaders of the nation.”

He said Umno must become a credible opposition by continuing to provide services to the people if the party aspires to return to power and wrest back the federal administration from the ruling Pakatan Harapan coalition in the next general election.

“This is the second year that Umno is convening its annual general assembly as a party in the opposition pact.

“We must use this assembly to formulate the right strategy by not promising the moon or the stars or mislead the people with wrong data in order to win support for the party,” he said.
