Shah Alam City Council seizes 60 abandoned vehicles

SHAH ALAM: The Shah Alam City Council personnel seized 60 abandoned vehicles in an operation in Section U2 here yesterday.

Its head of corporate and public relations, Shahrin Ahmad, said the move followed public complaints received about a month ago.

He said the owners had been given notices to remove their vehicles from the public parking lots.

“The Shah Alam City Council had issued 140 notices, and given workshop and factory owners two weeks to remove the vehicles. Some owners obeyed the order, while others did not. Therefore, today (yesterday) we seized about 60 vehicles,” he said after the operation yesterday.

Shahrin said it cost the city council RM130 to transfer each vehicle to a depot.

He added that the abandoned vehicles were not only an eyesore but also made it difficult for clean-up to be carried out

He said the vehicles were also potential breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes.

The number of abandoned vehicles seized increases every year.

Only 20 per cent of owners come forward to reclaim their vehicles. A compound of RM600 is imposed on each vehicle.

“The vehicles will be disposed of by the Shah Alam City Council Disposal Board. Between January and October, 560 vehicles worth around RM300,000 have been disposed of,” Shahrin said

He said the city council personnel also demolished illegal building structures in the operation yesterday.
