GEORGE TOWN: Police arrested three people, including a woman, for growing weed in a luxury condo in Kuala Lumpur’s Mont Kiara area yesterday.

Bukit Aman Narcotic Crime Investigation Department director Datuk Mohd Khalil Kader Mohd said the three had been growing 53 marijuana plants, each measuring 0.9m to 1.2m in height, hydroponically.

“Usually, we find weed in farms, but now an entire unit in a luxury condominium is used to plant weed.

“This new situation is a challenge for the police, but we promise to up our strategy in nabbing these drug dealers, no matter where they operate from, be it a luxury condominium or a humble shed,” he said at the state police contingent headquarters, here, today.

Khalil said police had conducted the raid after receiving information that a unit in a luxury condominium was being used to plant weed.

“We seized 2.6kg of weed leaves, the weed plants and a car worth RM45,000.

“We estimate the total cost of the items seized at RM1.21 million, based on the market price per plant,” he added.

He said the three suspects, one of whom is a foreigner, were between 24 and 32, and did not have any previous criminal records.

One of them tested positive for weed.

“Based on the plant size, we believe they had set up operations more than six months ago,” he added.

The suspects have been remanded for six days from Tuesday for investigation under Section 6D of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for planting weed and Section 39B for distributing weed.

Meanwhile, police also successfully crippled a drug traffic syndicate with the seizure of drugs worth RM2,223,400.

Khalil said about one month ago.

The Petaling Jaya Narcotic Crime Investigation Department seized 10 plastic packages with 10,000gm of drugs, believed to be syabu, in Petaling Jaya.

He said the package was believed to have been meant for shipping to Sabah by courier.

Khalil said that following the seizure, police arrested a man.

“Two days ago, a team from the Penang Narcotic Crime Investigation Department conducted two raids between 1.30pm and 2.30pm at Bukit Tambun and managed to nab a 46-year-old local man and seize 17,522gm of syabu worth RM876,100, 23,606 Ecstasy pills worth RM1,180,300 and 1,001 grams of MDMA (Methyl enedioxy methamphetamine) powder worth RM167,000.

“We also seized a motorcycle worth RM12,000,” he added.

Khalil said the suspect was remanded for seven days until Dec 17 under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedures Act for further investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 of trafficking.
