3, including baby, killed, 2 seriously hurt in Dungun crash

DUNGUN: Three members of a family were killed, while two others were seriously injured in a collision between two cars at Jalan Dungun in Kampung Paya Kemudi here, today.

The deceased were identified as Myanmar national Shofeka Mohd Isalam, 23, and her husband and 1-year-old son, whose identities have yet to be ascertained. They had been travelling in a Perodua Kancil from Padang Pulut to Bukit Besi when the accident occurred at 9.45am, Bernama reported.

A fourth passenger of the Kancil – Shofeka’s other son, Omar Farok Hairul Bashar, 4 – was seriously injured and rushed to the Dungun Hospital by members of the public.

The driver of a Proton Iswara, Nurhazwani Mohd Idris, 21, was also injured and pinned to his seat.

It is believed that the accident occurred when the Proton Iswara, which was leaving the Bukit Besi area, suddenly veered into the opposite lane and crashed head-on with the Kancil.

According to Dungun Fire and Rescue Station chief Mohd Aidil Khairim Abdul Wahab, rescuers took about 30 minutes to extricate Nurhazwani and remove the three bodies from the mangled cars.

“The bodies were taken to the Dungun Hospital’s Forensic Unit.

“The case is being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987,” said Dungun district police chief Superintendent Baharuddin Abdullah.
