Contractors of Pan Borneo Highway project told to buck up

SIBU: Works Minister Baru Bian, irked by the poor road conditions along the Miri-Sibu segment of the Pan Borneo Highway project, has urged the contractors to buck up.

“I travelled from Miri to Bintulu (last night) and from Bintulu to Sibu this morning. There are many potholes, which pose danger to road users, especially during rainy days or at night, when the visibility is poor.”

“All I can say is I am not happy,” he told reporters at Batang Rajang Bridge in Durin here today.

Baru said his Ministry would monitor the construction works on the ground closely to ensure every party involved adheres strictly to the set standards.

Yesterday, Baru Bian visited Package 11 (WPC-11) of the Pan Borneo Highway construction site in Miri, where a girder beam collapsed and injured two workers on Friday.

He urged various parties to stop speculating on the incident and let the authorities investigate.

“I can’t confirm when the investigation will be completed, but I assure action will be taken against those responsible,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Human Resource Ministry in a statement said a team from the state’s Occupational Safety and Health Department had begun its investigation on the incident.
