MB launches Pahang Disaster Squad

KUANTAN: The Pahang Disaster Squad was launched and flagged off by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail today at the Darul Makmur Stadium to help with flood relief efforts across the state.

The squad, he said, comprised of 42 non-governmental organisations from the state and has a manpower strength of around 10,000.

He said the squad was formed to provide assistance to disaster management agencies during untoward events such as fires, floods and landslides.

“It is important to understand that they are not replacing the authorities and agencies such as the Fire and Rescue Department or the Civil Defence Force but instead, to add on to the manpower available.

“I am touched that, although this is purely voluntary, it has received such encouraging numbers of people.

“This movement unites the people and allows them to be more progressive.

“The 42 bodies are from various background and by being here, they are able to unite as one,” he told a press conference after the launch.

Wan Rosdy urged individuals interested in voluntary and social work to find the most suitable group for them and sign up instead of doing things solo.

The NGOs include the Social Welfare Department Volunteer Group, Pahang Ukhwah and Silaturrahim Welfare Association, Pahang Sabil Umno Youth Movement Squad, Unit Amal Pas Pahang and Pahang SIngle Mothers Association.

The menteri besar also handed cheques amounting to RM363,700 to 30 recipients affected by the floods, for medical bills, education and for home repair.

He said the recipients were thoroughly vetted to ensure credibility.

“We hope the state disaster squad will ease the burden of those affected by the floods, both during and after the season,” he said.

Looking into the future, he said the squad would be further strengthened with knowledge sharing with the authorities and experts in handling natural disasters.
