iGuru: Resolve Jawi controversy through dialogues

SEREMBAN: The khat controversy should be resolved through dialogues between the Education Ministry and both the pro and opposition groups.

The Malaysian Muslim Teachers’ Association (iGuru) president Mohd Azizee Hasan said this was to ensure peace and harmony in the country was preserved.

He said all quarters, including political parties and non-governmental organisations, should view Jawi as a national heritage and an entity that must be protected.

“Everyone should place national interests above political interests. iGuru lauds the court order to stop Chinese education groups Dong Zong from holding a rally in protest of (introduction of) Jawi (in vernacular schools),” he said when contacted.

The rally was originally scheduled to take place in Kajang today but was cancelled following a court order.

Meanwhile, Dong Zong secretary-general Ng Chai Heng in expressing discontent over the court order, said the Chinese Organisations Joint Conference was meant to express views on the issue of teaching and learning of Jawi in vernacular schools.

“The conference was aimed at looking for solutions through dialogues, instead of via confrontational means, which can provoke racial sentiments," Ng said.

“It was to be attended by the Indian community, Malay academicians as well as representatives from Sabah and Sarawak.

“The police should be taking action against individuals and groups who intended to threaten and disrupt the peaceful assembly.”
