Gamis does not want Education Ministry to kowtow on Jawi issue

KUALA LUMPUR: Gabungan Mahasiswa Islam Se-Malaysia (Gamis) has urged the Education Ministry (MoE) not to give in to the demands of certain quarters seeking to undermine the implementation of Jawi in schools.

Its president Saifullah Baiduri said the issue should be resolved in an amicable manner and any decision taken by the ministry must be for the good of all which includes ensuring the nation’s identity was protected.

“The Jawi issue is quite close to us as it involves the question of education and we as graduates understand the nation’s educational movement.

“Even though there is joint discussions, the MoE must ensure that matters related to specifically the Malay people is preserved, while at the same time it should be resolved without undermining the nation’s multiracial harmony,” he said.

Saifullah called for the teaching of Jawi to be continued in all schools as it was not linked to any Islamisation agenda.

“Those who reject its teaching are actually still short-sighted about its actual aim, with many even alleging that it was for Islamisation,” he said.

He said Muslim graduates nationwide would not hesitate to gather and protest if certain quarters continue to sow confusion on the teaching of Jawi.

The National Jawi Congress earlier today unanimously approved seven resolutions rejecting the implementation of Jawi writing and sought a dialogue with MoE.

On Saturday, Chinese education group Dong Jiao Zong cancelled a Chinese Organisations Joint Conference and rally on the Jawi issue.

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador said the court order obtained by Kajang police to cancel the rally was done in the interest of security.
