IGP: 2019 crime rate dropped 7.5 per cent

KUALA LUMPUR: The crime index in Malaysia recorded a decrease of 7.5 per cent throughout last year, with 249 cases per 100,000 populations.

Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador said despite not meeting the target of 269 cases, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) had shown remarkable achievement.

In fact, he said in the fight against crimes, the police also focused on drug prevention, with nine specialised operations mobilised.

"Among our biggest successes was the seizure of 12 tonnes of cocaine worth RM2.4 billion worth under Op Eagle in Penang on Sept 10.

"We are also implementing two other programmes, 'Naziran by Night' and 'Nurture for Betterment', to enhance the operational efficiency of the Narcotics CID and combat the drug menace," he said in a statement today.

On the issue of drug abuse among police personnel, Abdul Hamid said 269 officers and staff were arrested through Op Blue Devil last year.

"From Jan 1 to Jan 17 this year, nine officers and staff were detained after a screening test found them positive for drugs.

"I hope drug use among police personnel can be eradicated for the good image of the department. CID's continued efforts to conduct screening tests and surprise checks have been effective in reducing the cases," he added.

Abdul Hamid said the Commercial CID detained a total of 15,876 people through 17,582 operations during the year.

He added that 21,016 out of 26,465 investigation papers had been completed.

Meanwhile, the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) had arrested 3,086 people for various traffic offences, and 296 others for other offences.

In addition, Abdul Hamid said various viral road cases, including hit and run, bullying, road rage, drunk driving and drug abuse were also successfully resolved by the department.
