Eateries, nightclubs want stricter enforcement, campaigns

KUALA LUMPUR: Restaurateurs and nightclub operators believe that there is a need for stricter enforcement and awareness campaigns on drink driving.

More importantly, said Malaysia Singapore Coffee Shop Proprietors’ General Association president Datuk Ho Su Mong, consumers should be more responsible and know their limit when consuming alcohol.

“They are responsible for the amount of alcohol they consume. There has to be more awareness campaigns, such as putting up posters in coffee shops, restaurants and entertainment outlets to show the amount of alcoholic drinks one is allowed to have.

“For example, they should display the number of glasses of drinks allowed as a means to convey the message.

“Restaurants or places where events are usually held (where alcoholic drinks are served) should display posters on the dangers of drink driving, as well as the fines or jail terms for committing the offence.

“Stricter enforcement should be done at these outlets. There should be no compromise on drink driving as it endangers others,” he said.

Apart from the role played by the authorities, he said the media could play a greater part in tackling the issue.

Alcohol Consumer Rights founder Deepak Gill echoed Ho’s views.

He said consumers should opt for public transportation to return home if they were too drunk to drive.

“They should take public transport to return home and not get behind the wheel when they are intoxicated. They should also carpool with their friends.

“These are a few ways for them to avoid drink driving.

“We can’t stop people from drinking, but it is their responsibility to take care of themselves when they drink,” he said.
