Perak's economy not affected by MAPS closure

IPOH: The state government today gave its assurance that the investment and economy of the state would not be affected following the closure of the RM520 million Movie Animation Park Studios (MAPS).

Perak Investment, Industrial and Corridor Development committee chairman Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin said in fact there were local and international companies showing interest to take over the theme park.

“I have spoken to two companies, one is a local company while the other company is from China.

They are interested to help us but thorough research must be carried out by them before they can make any decision.

“So we are looking into ways on how best we are able to ensure the theme park is revived,” he told reporters after visiting Dex Draexlmaier Automotive Systems Sdn Bhd in Chemor here today.

It was reported that MAPS closed its operations on Jan 28 and would remain closed until further notice.

The closure notice was issued by the Receiver and Manager of Animation Theme Park Sdn Bhd (ATP) from Messrs Ernst & Young.

Last year, a portal reported that Affin Hwang Investment Bank Bhd had appointed Datuk Duar Tuan Kiat of Messrs Ernst & Young on Dec 4 as the receiver and manager of the property belonging to ATP, the operator of MAPS.

On the visit to the plant producing automotive wiring harness, Mohammad Nizar said that the Germany-based company which has been operating for 35 years here, would be expanding.

“Currently there are 800 people working in the company. With the expansion, an additional 500 will be hired in the next five years,” he said, adding that the RM54 million new building was expected to be completed by October.
