More than 1,000 police personnel on duty for Chingay

JOHOR BARU: A total of 1,031 police personnel will be on duty during the four-day Chingay celebration here set to begin Feb 11.

Johor Baru South police chief Assistant Commissioner Shahurinain Jais said the largest number of personnel, about 600, will be on duty on Feb 14.

"We expect this year's Chingay celebration will be smaller in scale due to the novel Coronavirus outbreak. There will be no stage performances along the route of the procession," said Sharurinain.

He said the Johor Health Department will also conduct screening on visitors and participants of the celebration at the Xin Kong Temple in Jalan Ayer Molek here.

"All the police personnel involved will be equipped with the necessary safety equipment like face masks.

"I would like to advise those participating in the celebration to always follow the advice and directions of the authorities in order to ensure everyone's safety," said Shahurinain.

Chingay is held on the 21st day of the Lunar New Year and has become a national heritage event in Johor which has been celebrated for the past 150 years.
