ALOR STAR: A Form 4 student from Gurun, near here, had a close shave when he was hit by an arrow during a practice session at a school field this afternoon.

The arrow, fired by a fellow student, was said to have pierced through the boy's left eye socket and out of his ear.

Police said doctors at Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital managed to remove the arrow and the boy is recovering.

“The operation was a success. Luckily, it didn't hit directly at the victim's eye, just the vein near it." said Kuala Muda police chief Assistant Commissioner Adzli Abu Shah.

In the 3,30pm incident, he said the victim and his friends were practising at the school field for the upcoming state-level tournament on Feb 19.

"There were two targets placed at a range of five and 70 metres. The distance between the two targets was just about three metres.

“Some of the archers were doing warm-up shots at the five-metre target while the victim and his friends were practising at the 70-metre target."

Adzli said one of the female archers accidentally released the arrow when the victim was walking towards the 70-metre target.

"The stray arrow was believed to hit the victim's left eye." he said.

The victim was then rushed to the Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital where an operation was performed to remove the arrow.

According to witnesses, there was no supervising teacher at the time of the incident.

The students were said to have picked up the archery equipment themselves to practice.

Adzli said a police inquiry paper has been opened to allow for an investigation to proceed.
