Wan Azizah expresses shock over Thai shooting, calls for unity among Malaysians

KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail today condemned the Thai soldier who killed at least 20 people in the hours-long shooting rampage that was broadcast on Facebook.

She said the world had no place for people who committed heinous crimes like this and social media should not be used as a tool by such criminals.

“I read with shock and horror the news about the shooting rampage at a shopping mall in the Thai city of Nakhon Ratchasima which resulted in the death of at least 20 and injured dozens.

“My deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who perished. I pray for them and those injured to have strength to endure this test. I also pray for the speedy recovery of those injured.

"The people of Malaysia stand with the people of Thailand during this painful period,” she told reporters after attending a Chinese New Year open house jointly organised by the Malaysian Chinese Muslim Association and the Islamic Development Department here today.

Yesterday, Thai soldier Jakraphanth Thomma killed his commanding officer, stole weapons from a military base, and went on to launch a devastating attack on civilians in the city of Nakhon Ratchasima, which he broadcast on Facebook. His post was however later removed.

Jakrapanth was shot dead early this morning by Thai commandos, nearly 17 hours after the incident.

Dr Wan Azizah, in her speech earlier, urged racial and religious based orgnisations to play a role in shaping racial and religious tolerance in their members.

“This includes guiding their members based on civic principles, unity and the Rukun Negara so that each of us can feel that we are siblings of different parents, race and religions.

“Unity is one the factors that leads to harmony and well-being in society. It is also the foundation of a nation's success,” she said.
