'Stay away from beaches'

KUALA TERENGGANU: Stay away from the beaches, at least until tomorrow, following the arrival of strong winds of up to 60km/h, creating waves as high as 4.5m, making even strolling along the beach dangerous.

The phenomena suggests that the monsoon period is not over yet.

The “snow moon” coinciding with the high tide in the next couple of days will make conditions unsafe for activities along the beach or for fishermen to go out to sea.

“The strong winds and high waves are not only making it dangerous for the public to stroll along the beaches but unsafe for fishing vessels to go out to sea too,” said State Civil Defence Force director Lt-Col (PA) Che Adam Abd Rahman.

He said the Meteorological Department had issued a warning on the dangerous conditions affecting the waters in Terengganu, Kelantan, Pahang and east Johor, forecast to last until tomorrow.

“The waves are dangerous and can easily sweep away anyone strolling near the beach. People can be easily washed away into the sea by rough waves.

“Don’t tempt fate by looking for clams or swim at places you think are safe because the weather conditions affecting the beaches are dangerous, especially the strong undercurrents,” he told the New Straits Times.

It was observed that the impact of the winds could be felt as far as 10km inland, causing trees to sway erratically.

Che Adam said his men would be on the alert and respond to any emergency.
