Amid Covid-19 slump, Langkawi hotels dangle discounts of up to 70pct

LANGKAWI: As tourists stay away over Covid-19 coronavirus fears, hotel operators here have bitten the bullet and are offering discounts on room rates of between 30 and 70 per cent.

The island’s hotels have been badly hit by room booking cancellations and a plunge in tourist arrivals here, especially from China, the epicentre of the epidemic.

Kedah/Perlis Branch of the Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) vice-president Razmi Rahmat said that 45 of the island’s hotel operators affiliated with it have agreed to slash their room rates to lure back tourists, Bernama reported.

He said the offer, which is effective from now until a date to be announced, applies to hotels in the three-star category and above.

“A three-star hotel, for example, will have an attractive deal starting at RM150, and not more than RM250 per night.

“Prospective guests can check the hotels’ websites for more information,” Razmi added.

He also stressed that Langkawi is safe to visit, as the ongoing Le Tour de Langkawi 2020 has demonstrated.
