King attends 256th meeting of Conference of Rulers

KUALA LUMPUR: Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah today attended the second day of the 256th meeting of the Conference of Rulers at Istana Negara here.

The meeting, which started yesterday, was chaired by the Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Shah.

Today’s meeting was attended by the Malay Rulers except for Kelantan, which was represented by the Tengku Mahkota of Kelantan Tengku Dr Muhammad Faiz Petra Sultan Ismail Petra; Pahang by the Regent of Pahang Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah Al-Sultan Abdullah; Johor by Regent of Johor Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim; and Selangor by Raja Muda of Selangor Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.

Also in attendance were the Yang Dipertuas Negeri of Penang, Melaka, Sabah and Sarawak.

Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad also attended the meeting and the Malay Rulers were accompanied by their respective menteris besar, and the Yang Dipertuas Negeri by their respective chief ministers.

Meanwhile, the Office of the Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal in a statement said the Conference of Rulers had been briefed about the latest updates on national defence by the Chief of Defence Force General Tan Sri Affendi Buang and on security issues by Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador.

Negri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun also briefed the Conference of Rulers about the Rulers and Governors Scholarship Fund Board, which was established and funded by the Rulers and Governors since 1948, it said.

Aminuddin gave the briefing as the chairman of the Board. The Scholarship Fund was established to provide scholarship to students pursuing their first degree education at public higher educational institutions in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) as well as in artificial intelligence (AI).

The statement said among the issues discussed at the meeting were the appointment of judges of the higher courts, the appointment of the chairman and members of the Malay College Kuala Kangsar (MCKK) Board of Governors, and the outcome of the 116th meeting of the National Council Muzakarah Committee for Islamic Religious Affairs Malaysia.

Also discussed were the three Human Rights Commission of Malaysia’s (Suhakam) papers on the registration of tahfiz institutions, child marriage and disabled-friendly mosques in Malaysia. – BERNAMA
