Asian Flat Croissant with 'pulled tea' for breakfast?

KUALA LUMPUR: The next time you are at a Mamak restaurant, try asking your friend if he or she fancies a plate of Asian Flat Croissant for tea?

In other words, roti canai - as Malaysians would say.

A posting by Nyonya Cooking - a site that shares cooking tips and recipes from Southeast Asian’s kitchens - on its Facebook page recently went viral for how it described our iconic roti canai.

Nyonya cooking shared an image referring to the dish as the “Asian Flat Croissant.”

It then proceeded to describe the dish as “a flatbread with Indian origins and is extremely loved in countries like Malaysia and Singapore.

“Usually eaten with dhal, fish or chicken curry, roti canai is sometimes served sweet with condensed milk, banana or even chocolate cream.”

On its webpage at nyonyacooking.com, the site named the dish simply as roti canai.

Roti Canai is also known as roti Chennai (after the city in South India), roti prata and parota around the globe.

MGAG shared a meme of this posting on Facebook. The post has been shared more than 4,000 times, with over 9,000 likes.

“Roti Canai is roti canai! What the heck is Asian flat croissant?” a netizen asked.

Melv Chong said “pair this croissant with a glass of silky smooth hand pulled black tea with premium selected condensed milk”, making reference to the teh tarik.

“Try order like this and see what is the mamak’s response,” Edwim Lam wrote.

“How about roti bomb? Crossaint de Bomb?” Addy Nova Saridi asked.
