Major drop in traffic volume in Klang Valley on first day of RMO

KUALA LUMPUR: Traffic in Klang Valley today has dropped significantly on the first day of the two-week restrictive movement order imposed by the government to contain the spread of Covid-19.

City Traffic Enforcement Investigation Department (TEID) chief Assistant Commissioner Zulkefly Yahya said the traffic has dropped to only 10 per cent of the normal weekday traffic volume.

“At 7am, there were some car movements mostly workers involved in essential services, the traffic was also very smooth.

“By 9am, we saw a slight increase in the traffic volume at the main roads such as Jalan Kuching, Jalan Cheras, Jalan Tuanku Abd Halim, Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah, Jalan Genting Klang, Setapak, Jalan Ampang and Jalan Tun Razak, but everything was good,” he said in a statement today.

Zulkefly said his men have been stationed at strategic locations around the city particularly near shopping complex to monitor the traffic and people's movement.

Meanwhile, Selangor deputy TEID chief Deputy Superintendent Sahimi Husin said traffic on major Selangor roads had been smooth since morning.

“We are monitoring the situation and my team are patrolling the ground from time to time.” he said.

Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced on Monday the closure of among others, pre-schools, government and private schools including daily schools, residential schools, international schools, tahfiz centres and other primary, secondary and pre-university institutions.

A travel ban is also imposed on foreign tourists while Malaysians are also banned from travelling overseas, while those who recently returned from abroad must undergo health checks and self-quarantine for 14 days.

The order was imposed under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 and the Police Act 1967, which cover a range of activities.
