KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 138 Malaysians who found themselves stranded in India have returned home, while 405 Indian nationals stranded in Malaysia had been repatriated back to their country.
Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Kamaruddin Jaafar attributed the swift repatriation process to the cooperation between the Malaysian and Indian governments to ease the journey of their respective nationals during the lockdown in both nations brought about by the Covid-19 infection.
This cooperation has enabled a total of 138 Malaysians and 405 Indians to return home to their respective countries,” said Kamaruddin, who is also the Foreign Ministry Covid-19 Task Force Chairman.
He said the repatriation of Malaysians saw 111 being flown back from New Delhi via an AirAsia flight and another 27 were flown back home through other commercial flights.
The repatriation flights involving 405 Indian nationals were undertaken through two AirAsia flights from KLIA to Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi and to Visakhapatnam International Airport in Visakhaptnam, Andhra Pradesh.
“The Foreign Affairs Ministry would also like to announce that as of 3pm, March 19, 2020, as many as 1,075 Malaysian citizens are still stranded in India,” he said in a statement.
The breakdown of Malaysians stranded in India are: Chennai (450); Trichy (430); New Delhi (97); Bangalore (63); Mumbai ( 24); and Cochin (11).
