Second wave of flood victims in Pahang surge overnight to 1,075

KUANTAN: Pahang recorded an increase in flood victims overnight as some 1,000 evacuees were moved to 24 temporary evacuation centres (PPS) in three districts.

As of 9 am, the number of flood victims in the state rose to 1,075 from 286 families compared to 749 people last night.

A state Civil Defence Force (APM) spokesman said Maran has emerged as the worst hit district with 440 victims from 101 families at 10 relief centres followed by Rompin with 403 victims from 124 families at seven relief centres.

"Pekan has 232 victims from 61 families at seven relief centres compared to 202 victims at 11pm yesterday. Ten relief centres have been operating in Maran since yesterday followed by seven each in Rompin and Pekan," he said.

Meanwhile, the flash floods which struck former tin mining town Sungai Lembing the second time in two weeks at noon yesterday have completely receded.

Sungai Kuantan near Bukit Kenau burst its banks at noon yesterday, and inundated the low-lying areas including Sungai Lembing town.

However, no one was evacuated and the water receded late yesterday evening. Sungai Lembing was also hit by floods on Dec 24 last year.

At the height of the first wave of floods in Pahang which struck on Dec 24 last year, some 700 people from six districts were evacuated.
