MCO guidelines: Students not allowed to leave hostels

KUALA LUMPUR: Students who have yet to return to their hometown have to stay put during the movement control order (MCO) period to curb the spread of the Covid-19 outbreak.

This is in line with the Higher Education Ministry’s guidelines, in the form of a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) list issued to all institutions yesterday.

According to the ministry’s guidelines, students, both local and international residing in the campus, or in rented and private properties must remain in the premises.

This includes those who had bought travel tickets to return home during the MCO period.

The guideline also stated that students must report on their whereabouts to their institution’s management in accordance with the nationwide order which takes effect from March 18 to March 31.

Higher Education Minister Datuk Dr Noraini Ahmad said universities are encouraged to provide accommodations for students facing difficulties returning to their respective homes during this period.

She also advised students staying in campuses to practice social distancing among friends who are also staying there.

A Universiti Malaya spokesperson said hostels are opened for students who are not returning home during the movement control order.

"In fact, the hostel cafeterias are also opened for them to take away food.

"However, they could not have access to the facilities in the campus since it will be closed during the period."

A Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) spokesperson said the university has provided accommodation for students who are not returning in line with the ministry's guidelines.

On Monday, the government announced a 14-day movement control order, beginning March 18 until March 31, to curb the Covid-19 infection in the country.
