Kitties turning into fatties during MCO

KUALA LUMPUR: It appears that humans are not the only ones gaining weight during this one month Movement Control Order (MCO) period.

Several social media platforms indicate that our furry little friends too are putting on the extra pounds.

Based on observations through social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Reddit, cat owners are now posting more pictures of their “expanded” kitties.

Twitter account by the name “Bulu Bulu Kehidupan” which features images and videos of cats, uploaded a before-and-after picture of a cat named Miko Angelo with the caption “March 18 vs April 14”.

The picture showed a skinny cat turning into a bear-like kitty in just a matter of days.

A Twitter user by the name Pizza Frenzy commented on the post and pointed out that Miko can no longer wear its pet collar due to the weight gain.

On Reddit, a special page dedicated to overweight cats called “Chonkers” is gaining traction among social media users worldwide and it seems that the “fatty kitty problem” is happening outside Malaysia too.

Almost all of the recent postings on Chonkers page were uploaded not more than a week ago and they all featured obese cats who are mostly staying at home with their owners who are observing self-quarantine following the Covid-19 outbreak.

Aside from that, many cat owners have also reported that their pets are now getting “bored and annoyed” at seeing their owners’ faces every single day.

Bulu Bulu Kehidupan also pointed this out by posting a video of a cat and its owner, myuuuuchan_1116, which showed the cat slapping the face of its owner for kissing its furry cheeks too many times.

Perhaps the “chonker” is getting tired of all the excessive attention given to it lately.

While governments around the world are still calling on its citizens to practice social distancing, not all are obeying this instruction.

However, a cat belonging to Reddit user Chow_17 is heeding the government‘s order in practising social distancing by lying down on dried leaves alone, believed to be outside its owner’s house.

In case anyone is wondering if their pets could get infected by the Covid-19 virus and spreading it to other humans, fear not.

The World Health Organisation said that there is no evidence that companion animals such as dogs or cats can spread the virus or become infected, although it is wise to keep your pets away from people who have contracted Covid-19.
