UMP undergrads thrilled over RM200 aid, free internet

KUANTAN: Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) undergraduates described the one-off payment of RM200, part of the Prihatin Rakyat Economic Stimulus Package (Prihatin), as a most timely handout.

Its Student Representative Council (MPP) president Mohd Fitri Zulkaffli said the announcement will certainly bring some relief to students in these tough times.

"We are grateful to the government for providing undergraduates some cash aid to ease our burden," he said.

Fitri said since students were no longer attending physical and face-to-face lectures, they were looking forward to the free internet package starting from April 1 until the end of the Movement Control Order (MCO).

"The announcement is timely as some students will now have to rely on their internet data to participate in online classes.

“Since some have returned to their hometowns, they might need the free internet packages to ensure they can continue to participate in classroom activities," he said.

Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin today announced a one-off payment of RM200 to cushion the economic impact of the Covid-19 outbreak to students at higher learning institutions nationwide.

He also announced that the government will be providing a free Internet package to all users starting from April 1 until the end of the MCO.

Meanwhile civil servant Shahrinahar Latib, 34, said the Prime Minister's announcement has certainly brought some relief to families in the B40 category.

The father-of-three said several good news which were part of the package will certainly help low-income families brave through the tough times during the Covid-19 outbreak.

"The discounts and exemptions announced by the government will now allow families to do some planning and set aside some extra savings. We know what to expect and can make the required preparations," he said.

Meanwhile a nurse who declined to be named said the move to increase the special allowance for healthcare workers from RM400 to RM600 a month displayed the government's appreciation towards the medical frontliners in the country.
