Mobile disinfection chamber installed at Penang's Rifle Range Flat

GEORGE TOWN: A mobile disinfection chamber has been installed at one of the blocks in the state’s oldest low-cost flat, the Rifle Range Flat, as part of efforts to combat the Covid-19 pandemic.

The disinfection chamber is similar to the one installed at the Balik Pulau Market where it provides full-body sanitisation service.

Kebun Bunga assemblyman Jason Ong Khan Lee said he decided to install the mobile disinfection chamber at Block J of the flat for a start.

“We have planned for it for a while and finally it has come true.

“All the residents need to do is just walk through it. It has sensors to activate and deactivate the disinfectant sprays inside the chamber,” he told the New Straits Times when contacted today.

Ong has chosen Block J to start the project with as the flat has a number of sundry shops operating at the ground floor. Also, it is located beside a public market.

He said during peak hours many people would be walking past the area, and they could use it too.

This, he added, would indirectly create awareness on the importance of maintaining cleanliness.

He envisioned to install the mobile disinfection chamber at the other blocks as well, and hoped that volunteers or non-governmental organisations could lend a hand to expedite the process.

“Should we manage to combat the Covid-19 later, this chamber is here to stay," he said.

Previously, there were talks that a resident of one of the blocks was tested positive for Covid-19, but it quickly died down.

However, it re-emerged as soon as Ong installed the chamber at the block.

“It’s a rumour," he quipped.
