300,000 applications received via Gerak Malaysia in 12 hours

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have received a whopping 300,000 applications on the Gerak Malaysia app, within 12 hours after the mobile application went live.

Federal police Criminal Investigations Department director Datuk Huzir Mohamed said of the total, 100,000 were requests for interstate travel permit.

"They (comprised) those who were stranded at their hometowns, who could not return home after the implementation of the Movement Control Order (MCO).

"We expect the number to multiply by May 1," he said.

Huzir guaranteed that only applications with valid reasons would be entertained.

"In the meantime, police will monitor and review the application trends through Gerak Malaysia.

"The findings will then be presented to the government to allow the permitted travel date to be reviewed in line with the total number of applications."

He urged that only those with valid reasons for travelling to register with the app.

"Cooperation from all parties is crucial to ensure the Gerak Malaysia app can benefit those who really need to return home.

"Further development regarding the interstate travel schedule will be announced soon." he said.
