PM to address nation in conjunction with Labour Day

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is scheduled to address the nation at 11am tomorrow.

This is in conjunction with Labour Day which is celebrated on May 1.

The special address can be viewed on local television channels Astro Awani, Bernama TV, RTM and TV3.

A poster for the special address was uploaded on Muhyiddin's official Facebook page and distributed to the media.

The Labour Day celebration in Malaysia began when former Deputy Prime Minister, the late Tun Dr Ismail Abdul Rahman announced May 1 as a public holiday for workers in the early 1970s.

The announcement was made while he was launching the Labour Bureau Trade Union Seminar and Umno Trade Union at Dewan Belia, Kampung Pandan, Kuala Lumpur on May 20, 1972.

At that time, Dr Ismail said the decision was made with the hope that the labour movement would perceive May 1 as a day dedicated to workers, which befits national aspirations.

This announcement was important because it not only recognises the contribution of workers, but indirectly shows that Malaysia is in agreement with the decisions of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Convention which approved May 1 as Labour Day or May Day.
