Gerak Malaysia: Interstate travels begin tomorrow

KUALA LUMPUR: Those stranded in Kuala Lumpur and other states will be able to return to their hometowns between tomorrow and Sunday.

Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the police, through Gerak Malaysia, had released travel schedules for those leaving Kuala Lumpur and other states.

"Those in Kuala Lumpur can return to other states, and for those from Kuala Lumpur who want to fetch their children left in their kampung (hometowns) when the movement control order (MCO) began can do so.

"If they leave tomorrow and return on the same day, they must inform the police through the Gerak Malaysia phone app. If they wish to rest at their hometown for a day or two before returning to KL (for those fetching family members), they must leave on the date set by the police, according to the states.

"For instance, if you travel to Pahang from KL-- which is quite far and you need to stay for one or two days-- you can leave Pahang on the date set in the schedule (May 9)," he told a Press conference in Putrajaya today.

Ismail Sabri said travellers were encouraged to drive non-stop to their respective destinations, except for toilet breaks and to fill petrol along the Rest and Service areas (R&R).

Petrol stations along the highways are open from 6am to midnight, while food stalls and surau at the R&R are closed, he said.

He advised non-Muslims to bring their own packed meals.

Those who wished to take a break from driving may do so, but were reminded to remain in the vehicles and were prohibited from wandering about.

He said the police would issue further details and SOPs for the movements.

It was reported that some 1.16 million smartphone users had downloaded the Gerak Malaysia app, which could be used to apply for permission for interstate travel.

Interstate travels for approved Gerak Malaysia applicants are as follows:

May 7: From KL to other states in Peninsula and for parents from KL fetching children or family members left in hometowns prior to MCO.

May 8: From Perak, Johor and Kelantan

May 9: From Perlis, Kedah, Penang, Melaka and Pahang

May 10: From Selangor, Negri Sembilan and Terengganu
