PUTRAJAYA: No Kawasaki cases have been detected among children infected by Covid-19 in the country, said Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

Nonetheless, he said the community should prevent the infection among children by complying with the Health Ministry's standard operating procedures.

He said Kawasaki disease syndrome is an illness that causes inflammation in blood vessels, especially among children below five years old.

"The children then will develop symptoms such as fever and rashes in certain areas.

"But, so far no cases have been recorded," he said.

Recently, it was reported that 317 children under 12 tested positive for Covid-19 in the country, with 112 under four years of age, while 22 were infants.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Saturday said in the past weeks, a small number of children infected with Covid-19 being admitted to the intensive care units with a multi-system inflammatory condition with some features similar to Kawasaki's disease and toxic shock syndrome in Europe and North America.
