Green light for churches, temples in green zones to reopen, subject to SOP

PUTRAJAYA: Non-Muslim houses of worship in green zone districts will be allowed to reopen from June 10 onwards, subject to strict standard operating procedures (SOP).

Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said among the SOPs include a maximum of 30 people at a time, and barring those above 70 and children below 12 from entering.

"If the size of the premise is small, fewer numbers of people will be allowed in.

"Only Malaysians will be allowed to enter these houses of worship and the premises would only be allowed to open on important days, according to each religion," he told a press conference today.

He said for example, churches would be allowed to open on Sundays, while Buddhist and Hindu temples could open once or twice a week, depending on their prayer days.

The premises, added Ismail Sabri, must take the temperatures of the congregation, and also ensure that everyone used face masks and hand sanitisers.

"These SOPs were established after discussions between the government and religious leaders."

He said the government had approved 174 non-Muslim houses of worship to open nationwide.
