Lower speed limit soon for Penang heritage zones

GEORGE TOWN: A lower speed limit will be imposed on motorists driving through Penang's George Town World Heritage Site soon.

Penang Island City Council (MBPP) mayor Datuk Yew Tung Seang said a proposal to lower the speed limit from 50km to 40km in some parts of the heritage area is in place and will be enforced soon.

This, he said, will make the heritage zone become more pedestrian and cyclist-friendly and in line with efforts towards becoming a green and safe city.

Speaking to reporters at the MBPP ordinary council meeting, conducted via teleconferencing today, Yew noted that the proposal for the speed limit reduction will need to be tabled first with the procedures ironed out before it can be enforced.

The roads expected to be affected by the new speed limit are internal roads at Jalan Dr Lim Chwee Leong; Gat Jalan Prangin, Pengkalan Weld; Pesara King Edward; Lebuh Light; Lebuh Farquhar; Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah; and Jalan Penang.

The other roads are Jalan Tun Syed Sheh Barakbah; Jalan Padang Kota Lama; Lebuh Duke; Jalan Green Hall; Gat Lebuh Leith; Lebuhraya Merdeka; Jalan Merdeka; Lintang Merdeka; Pintasan Pengkalan 1; Pintasan Pengkalan 2; Pintasan Pengkalan 3; and Pintasan Pengkalan 4.

"The lower speed limit will encourage motorists to respect those who need to walk or cycle especially in these areas," said Yew.
