GEORGE TOWN: Durian lovers in Penang will have to compromise on several matters if they want to enjoy the delectable king of fruits during the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO).
Firstly, they will not have the 'privilege' of choosing a durian and asking the seller to open the fruit to check on its flesh, which had been the norm for buyers.
They are also prevented from dining at the durian stalls – an activity which had been part of Penang's social scene.
State Local Government, Housing Development and Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo said only takeaway durian in packed Tupperware will be allowed during the CMCO.
"Previously, we only allowed sellers to do their business at nine public markets on the island, and about 12 on the mainland. This is so we can control the crowd during the MCO.
"But now, after requests have been made, we will allow roadside traders to start selling durian only for takeaway. This is for Phase 1" he said today.
Jagdeep said that the move is also part of the Penang Gradual Recovery Strategy (PGRS) to reopen industries in stages.
He also said that both local councils will draft medium and long-term plans for Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to sell the King of Fruits.
Also present were Penang Island City Council (MBPP) mayor Datuk Yew Tung Seang and Komtar assemblyman Teh Lai Heng.
