KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians will experience a partial solar eclipse phenomenon on June 21 between 2.30pm and 5.30 pm.
The maximum coverage of the sun in Kuala Lumpur is up to 10.4 per cent which is expected to occur at 3:57pm.
In a statement today, the National Planetarium said it will feature an image of the partial solar eclipse on their social media accounts, Facebook and YouTube National Planetarium.
"Telescope facilities at the National Planetarium will not be open for the public due to the Covid-19 pandemic and in line with the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO).
"Malaysians are advised to watch the partial solar eclipse phenomenon live stream via Facebook and YouTube National Planetarium. It is more secure to watch the phenomenon virtually compared to looking directly at the sun without proper equipment," said the statement.
It also said those interested in observing the phenomenon from their respective locations were advised to always use solar filters and were forbidden to look straight at the sun, which could cause eye damage and blindness.
It added that the solar filter used during the eclipse sun ring on Dec 26, 2019, can be reused to see the phenomenon of the partial solar eclipse this time.
The National Planetarium will collaborate with Apadilangit non-government organisations (NGOs), the host of Malaysia-East Asia Universe Awareness Solar Eclipse to feature the partial solar eclipse event live from eight East Asian countries.
"Within the countries, Taiwan will experience the eclipse sun ring phenomenon this year.
"There are also few countries like Congo and Ethiopia in Africa, Yemen, Oman, Pakistan, India and China which will experience the eclipse sun ring phenomenon apart from Taiwan," it said.
The National Planetarium will try to display the image of the solar eclipse ring from these countries through their Facebook and YouTube National Planetarium for comparison with the partial solar eclipse phenomenon in Malaysia.
