Felda Chini youth quits job to become livestock breeder

PEKAN: He graduated in mechanical engineering, but as fate would have it, Mohd Faiz Ikhwan Salleh, 27, is now a livestock breeder, happily working with cows, goats and ducks.

After he completed his studies, Mohd Faiz's family asked him to help them look after his ailing father, a Felda Chini 2 settler.

This led to him quitting his job at an estate company in 2016 and returning to his family home where he developed an interest in livestock rearing.

"I was jobless then and looking after my late father did not take up too much time, so because I was interested in livestock breeding, I decided to get into it, with a starting capital of about RM5,000, buying livestock and building animal enclosures," he said when met at his farm.

Today, he is the proud owner of 14 cows, 25 goats, 80 ducks reared for meat and 120 reared for eggs.

According to Mohd Faiz, most of his customers are from the Chini area itself.

He said ducks sold for meat are priced at about RM50 each while duck eggs or salted eggs are 70 sen and RM1 each repectively.

Mature cattle are sold at between RM3,000 and RM3,500 while goats between RM1,000 and RM1,800.

Mohd Faiz who has attended several livestock breeding courses conducted by the Veterinary Services Department said he is willing to share his knowledge and experience with other youths who are interested in livestock breeding. -- BERNAMA
