Covid-19: One new death, the first since mid-June

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has recorded one new Covid-19 fatality as of noon today, its first case since mid-June, bringing the death toll in the country to 122.

Health Ministry (MoH) director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the deceased, case 8702, was a 72-year-old Malaysian man who was pronounced dead at the Sarawak General Hospital at 5.49pm yesterday.

"Case 8702 had a history of hypertension and diabetes; he received several traditional treatments since July 3 before he was brought to a private hospital on July 9.

"He was immediately transferred to Sarawak General Hospital when he was suspected positive for Covid-19. His condition worsened and was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU)," he said in a statement today.

Eight new cases were reported as of noon today, bringing the total number of cases to 8,704.

"Of the eight new cases, four were imported while four were local transmissions involving two Malaysians and two foreigners.

Cases involving foreigners was detected at Sepang Immigration detention centre, with the duo detected after undergoing Covid-19 screenings before being deported back to their origin country.

Dr Noor Hisham said currently Malaysia has 67 active cases, with four patients had recovered and discharged from the hospital.

Total cumulative discharged cases now at 8,515.

He added three Covid-19 patients were being treated at ICU, where two were on ventilator support.
