KUALA LUMPUR: Eight Malaysians stranded in Uganda due to transboundary restrictions imposed to curb the spread of Covid-19, returned home safely earlier this morning.
Their return was announced by Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Kamarudin Jaffar in a statement today.
"These Malaysians departed via a special chartered flight from Uganda to Tanzania, afterwhich they switched to a Qatar Airways commercial flight which departed Tanzania for the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).
"This repatriation is jointly funded by the Malaysian government and the Malaysians concerned.
"Upon arrival at the KLIA at 8.25am today, they will undergo a health screening process and a 14-day quarantine at their respective homes, in accordance with the standard operating procedures (SOP) set by the Malaysian government.
"On behalf of the government, we would like to express our deepest appreciation to the Malaysian High Commission in Nairobi, Kenya and Mr Habib Kagimu, the Honorary Consul of Malaysia in Uganda who helped assisted the group of Malaysians while they were stranded and facilitated their return to Malaysia.
"The ministry, through Malaysian representatives overseas will constantly monitor the current situation of Malaysians overseas to ensure their wellbeing," Kamarudin said.
