Primary school installs hands-free pedal sinks for students

KUALA TERENGGANU: A primary school in Pasir Panjang has come up with innovative ways to ensure students and teachers strictly comply with the standard operating procedures to address the spread of Covid-19.

This includes the installation of light bulbs outside students' toilet facilities to indicate if they are in use and hands-free pedal sinks to minimise contact among each other.

The management of Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Pasir Panjang had forked out only RM150 to fix four signal lights outside the toilets for boys and girls.

School headmaster Rosli Abd Razak said the facilities and equipment were installed for the use of students following the SOP set by the Health Ministry.

"Every student who enters the toilet only needs to flick the switch on the light bulb line on the panel board.

"If the red light bulb lights up on the panel board, it indicates that the toilet is being used and students have to wait until the green light comes on before entering the toilet," he said.

He said this when met after accompanying the Terengganu State Education Department director, Salim Abd Ghani who came down to check on the school's compliance with the SOP today.

Rosli explained that the signal lights and foot-operated hand wash sinks were the brainchild of mathematics teacher, Norazhar Nordin.

Teachers, he said, contributed to the installation of these facilities and equipment.

"Teachers and students do not have to use their hands to open the water tap, instead just step on the pedals made of plywood."

Meanwhile, Salim, who was impressed with the creativity and innovation of the teachers, said although the methods employed were simple, their usage was practical.

"Apart from the signal lights, several other facilities were also created for the use of more than 600 students, including placing water barrels and sinks outside the classrooms, as well as hand sanitiser dispensers that only need to be stepped on without using hands," he said.
