3 paired road projects in Penang to proceed, no decision on undersea tunnel

GEORGE TOWN: Penang will proceed with its three paired road projects but no decision has been made on the controversial undersea tunnel construction.

The paired road projects are being undertaken by the same company which was also awarded the RM6.3 billion undersea tunnel contract.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the feasibility study for the paired road projects had been completed and preliminary works for one of the packages - 5.7km Ayer Itam-Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway bypass - was ongoing.

"For the tunnel project, its feasibility study has yet to be completed and no payment has been made.

"The state government will only decide whether to go ahead with the project or otherwise once its feasibility study is done," Chow told a press conference today.

Yesterday, DAP secretary-general and former finance minister Lim Guan Eng was charged with soliciting a bribe from the company which was awarded the undersea tunnel project.

Meanwhile, Chow denied rumours on current and former state executive councillors to face charges linked to the tunnel project.

"I do not see this happening," he said.

Earlier, Penang DAP launched a "Solidarity with Lim Guan Eng" campaign as an effort to support Lim in facing the court charges.

Penang DAP publicity secretary Steven Sim, who leads the campaign, reminded supporters not to gather in large groups at Butterworth Sessions Court on Monday and Tuesday as advised by the police to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

He said only senior state and federal DAP leaders and support staff would be present.

Also present at the press conference was DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang.
