28 nabbed, fined for hiking at off-limits Broga Hill

KAJANG: Police detained 28 hikers at Broga Hill in Semenyih over the weekend for breaching the Recovery Movement Control Order's (RMCO) standard operating procedures (SOPs).

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zaid Hassan said a team from the district's Covid-19 surveillance unit conducted checks at the hiking trails as part of a two-day operation, and picked up 28 individuals illegally accessing the hill.

He said the hikers, aged between 20 and 44, were part of a weekend hiking programme and were detained for trespassing and hiking in groups without adhering to SOPs.

As part of the ongoing RMCO, Broga Hill is off limits to the public.

"All of them were brought back to the Semenyih police station to have their details recorded; and two were detained under Section 269 of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 for negligence.

"Twenty-six were slapped with the RM1,000 compound each for their participation in a group activity," he said, adding that the other two were the main organisers of the programme.

Mohd Zaki said Broga Hill is still off limits to climbers and warned that action would be taken for defiance.

"This is also a precautionary measure to curb any possible spread of Covid-19 and for their own safety," he added.
