Significant drop in RMCO violators

KUALA LUMPUR: As people return to work after the long Merdeka weekend yesterday, the number of those arrested for offences under the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO) has dropped significantly.

Senior Defense Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabril Yaakob said 39 individuals were detained on Tuesday compared to 778 people the day before.

He said among those arrested included five for employing migrant workers without valid working permits, five owners of premises that operated beyond the permitted hours and six individuals for failing to provide proper registration and entry log at their premises.

Also detained on the same day included 13 people who did not wear face masks and 10 individuals who took part in activities that made physical distancing difficult.

"Out of this number, 27 were slapped with compounds, seven placed under remand while the rest released on bail," he said in a statement today.

The senior minister said the MCO Operation Task Force headed by the police carried out 63,206 inspections nationwide on Tuesday to ensure people complied with the standard operating procedures (SOP) enforced throughout the RMCO.

He said a total of 4,773 compliance teams involving 15,956 personnel conducted checks at 3,981 supermarkets, 5,162 restaurants as well as 1,611 hawkers, 1,810 factories, 3,681 banks and 1,111 government offices.

"Teams were also dispatched to monitor 1,789 land transport terminals, 208 water transport terminals and 125 air transport terminals," he said.

Ismail Sabri added police inspected 27,379 vehicles at 62 Ops Benteng roadblocks conducted nationwide on Tuesday to prevent undocumented immigrants from entering the country illegally.

"A total of 4,620 illegal immigrants, 698 tekong (boat captains) as well as 247 smugglers were nabbed. Authorities also seized 177 boats and 475 vehicles, between May 1 and Sept 1," he said.

Ismail Sabri also reminded the public on the updated travel requirements for entering Sarawak, previously announced by Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Douglas Uggah Embas, who is also the State Disaster Management Committee chairman.

He said from Sept 1, Malaysians entering Sarawak from West Malaysia, Labuan and Sabah, ware not required to undergo the 14-day long compulsory quarantine but must submit the E-Health Declaration Form (E-HDF).

All Malaysians entering Sarawak from abroad, however, must undergo mandatory quarantine at centres designated by the state government.

"A Covid-19 swab test will be conducted on the second and 10th day of the quarantine. The cost incurred during quarantine will be borne by the state government for Sarawakians.

"Non-Sarawakians will have to pay for the costs incurred themselves," he said on the ruling, which came into effect Sept 1.
